Lady in the Water
Friday, July 28th, 2006I’ve seen it and I liked it. I honestly expected this movie to disappoint me based on what critics have said, but then again, I should have known better. M. Night Shyamalan has never really been known for being a favorite of critics but I love his movies anyway (from ‘Sixth Sense’ to ‘Signs’ to ‘The Village’ although I’m not much of an ‘Unbreakable’ fan). Like any Shyamalan film every scene in this movie is a clue that makes the unraveling of the twist at the end (This isn’t a spoiler. We all know that an M. Night Shyamalan movie wouldn’t be one without a twist, right?) much more satisfying to witness. I recognize of course, the fact that not everyone would enjoy watching ‘Lady in the Water’. A little suspension of belief is highly recommended when viewing this. There may be some scenes that come off as awkward but let me tell you, those scenes are awkward just because Mr. Shyamalan is proving a point. You’ll realize this at the end of course (if you’re paying attention to the clues). Plus I love the fact that watching this movie just makes me want to keep on talking about it and analyzing it with a friend, making me like it even more. I’m dying to give away details but that would spoil your viewing fun and I wouldn’t want to do that. Let me just add that the acting of the cast is superb, especially Bryce Dallas Howard and Paul Giamatti. As in his past movies, M. Night Shyamalan appears in the movie but he plays a bigger role than usual and and gives surprisingly convincing performance. (If my writing here is incoherent & riddled with grammatical errors, I blame it on lack of sleep and the fact that the only thing keeping me up on my feet right now is Pepsi X.)
